Nevada State Hospital Cemetery

Today I received an update on the memorial dedication of the Nevada State Hospital Cemetery. Anonymous wrote: "A new monument with 767 names (and acknowledging that there are likely up to 400 more unknown) has been installed in the hospital cemetery. It will be dedicated this Friday, January 21, 2011 between 2-4 pm. This event is open to the public. After the outdoor dedication there will be refreshments and historical displays inside the new Agriculture Building adjacent to the cemetery".

This cemetery is a vital piece of Nevada's past; from 1882-1947, approximately 1000 patients from the nearby State Mental Health Institute lie buried on an adjacent piece of property with little or no ceremony to acknowledge their existence or final resting place.

The memorial is a result of a tremendous effort by the Friends of Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services Cemetery.

I'm hoping the weather holds and the day of the dedication is clear. If not, I'll bundle up and bring along a thermos of hot coffee. The cemetery is located on 21st Street and Frazier in Sparks; next to the Nevada Adult Mental Health Institute.

Friends of Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services Cemetery will have several historical displays in the Ag. Bldg. following this event. There will also be displays by other historical societies. Come to see photos of the old asylum and cemetery as well as a timeline of events that led to the terrible condition of the cemetery. There will be letters from people with family members in the cemetery and stories of patients. We hope to see you there and look forward to meeting everyone interested in this cemetery.

Ghost Hunt - Summit Tunnel No. 6, Donner Summit

My friend and fellow ghost hunter Mona grew up in Truckee, California. She has interesting (and eerie) stories to tell. Truckee began as a supply stop along the transcontinental railroad that was being built in the 1800s. It has a compelling history. Many buildings built back in the 1800s still stand today, and ghost stories abound. Mona had caught some interesting pictures while exploring the Summit Tunnel No. 6, one of the most difficult portions of the railway built. She asked if Paula and I were interested in joining her to investigate the tunnel further. Not knowing much about the history of this area, I went online and found out more about this incredible feat of engineering. A HISTORY Constructing a railroad 88 miles over the rugged Sierra Range between Newcastle and Truckee, California, took 12,000 men 3 years and 2 months (February 1865 to April 1868). The Sierra crest, the most challenging section, required 14 tunnels to maintain a maximum grade of 105 feet to the mile.

Knights of Pythias

Today I stroked an old man's ass...and paid him a dollar to do it. To clarify, the dollar was for the carrots we fed the miner's donkey up in Virginia City. Mariah and I were in Virginia City to get a few shots of the Knights of Pythias building during the daylight hours. The Knights of Pythias building is located at 30 North B Street in Virginia City, Nevada. The building was built in 1876 and is one of the few unaltered false-fronted buildings remaining in Virginia City. History Fraternal organizations such as the Knights of Pythias were an important part of life for the early residents of the Comstock. While some of these organizations were sometimes simply drinking or social clubs, others were organized around political ideals. A large number of these organizations were instituted as “benevolent” or “insurance” societies that provided old age, medical and life insurance benefits to their members.
